Focus and Scope

The Scandinavian Journal of Military Studies (SJMS) is an online, open access journal publishing both high quality research and valuable practice-oriented studies relevant to the military profession. Hence, the journal consists of two distinct tracks: A practice-oriented track comprising articles (predominantly) authored by professionals and often holding practical advice or clear policy recommendations for the military profession; a research track open for original research within the broad remit of “military studies”. Articles in both tracks are subjected to double-blind peer review.

SJMS aims to strengthen networks and the field of military studies within Scandinavia, but we welcome original research and practice-oriented studies from around the world dealing with issues relevant to the military profession and the broader field of military studies. As an explicitly pluralistic journal, SJMS welcomes articles and proposals from all perspectives and methodological points of departure.

The journal is produced and published by by a consortium involving the Norwegian Defence University College, the Swedish Defence University, the Centre for Military Studies, University of Copenhagen, the Swedish Centre for Studies of Armed Forces and Society, and the Royal Danish Defence College. Scandinavian Military Studies also has a press subsidiary - Scandinavian Journal of Military Studies Press - which publishes monographs within the subfields of military operations, strategy, law of war, military management, military sociology and military history.

Publication Frequency

The journal is published online as a continuous volume and issue throughout the year. Articles are made available as soon as they are ready to ensure that there are no unnecessary delays in getting content publically available.

Special collections of articles are welcomed and will be published as part of the normal issue, but also within a separate collection page.

Open Access Policy

This journal provides immediate open access to its content on the principle that making research freely available to the public supports a greater global exchange of knowledge.

Authors of articles published remain the copyright holders and grant third parties the right to use, reproduce, and share the article according to the Creative Commons license agreement.

The journal’s publisher focuses on making content discoverable and accessible through indexing services. Content is also archived around the world to ensure long-term availability.

To ensure permanency of all publications, this journal also utilises CLOCKSS, and LOCKSS archiving systems to create permanent archives for the purposes of preservation and restoration.

Annotation and post-publication comment

The journal platform permits readers to leave comments and in-browser annotations via hypothes.is. Readers will require a hypothes.is account to create annotations, and will have the option to make these public or private. Comments may be moderated by the journal, however, if they are non-offensive and relevant to the publication subject, comments will remain online without edit.

Advertisement Policy

The journal does not normally display adverts. On occasion, the editorial board may decide to display advertisements that are of relevance to its scope and will be of interest to the readership (e.g. upcoming conferences). All advertising space is provided free of charge and the editor and publisher have the right to decline or withdraw adverts at any point. Adverts will include a text heading to make it clear that they are adverts not related to the journal.

Journal History

The four collaborating institutions are all characterised by their close relation to practice and roots in the national defence. SJMS was established to support military research and provide a relevant channel for publication as well as to support the military profession.
